I was called to this work because of my personal experience caring for my aging parents, a passion for giving back and because of my love for seniors. I was busy building my career in the Boston area as my parents’ health declined. I know the emotional conflict of wanting to be there for them while trying to balance the demands of building a family and pursuing my professional dreams-from hundreds and eventually thousands of miles away.
My mom and dad instilled in me a strong ethic of volunteering. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for Pathways Hospice Foundation in Sunnyvale, CA, and hold the position of Secretary for the Board of Directors of Senior Housing Solutions, which was the first non-profit organization in the nation to explore “home sharing” as an innovative housing strategy for seniors with low incomes. I’ve served on the National Board of the Society of Women Engineers, been Treasurer for the Boston Chapter of the American Association of University Women and was part of the Dean’s Advisory council for the University of Massachusetts’ College of Engineering.
I’ve spent over 30 years in the private sector managing multi-million dollar budgets and leading teams of up to 600 people in the telecommunications industry. I earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Cornell University and an MBA with a concentration in Finance from Northeastern University. Before starting my own company, I was a Finance Manager responsible for both Billing and Collections activities for over $500 million in annual revenue.
Why I do this work
After my dad passed away, at the age of 94, as I was going through his records, I discovered that he had lost out on the opportunity to take advantage of thousands of dollars in VA benefits and Medicare reimbursements because he didn’t know they were available, didn’t know how to claim them, wasn’t able to fill out the paperwork or do the internet research or perhaps was just too proud to ask for help.
Dad’s primary concern was being able to afford to stay in his own home while paying for full time care. In order to help him, I developed an approach that allowed me to oversee his care and caretakers along with his finances while he retained an appropriate level of control. As a result, he was able to keep his dignity, protect his assets and live out his days in the comfort and security of his own home.
I want to be able to help others do the same for their loved ones.
